Final Project
1) What is the main purpose of learning Applied Linguistics for you as language learners?
In line with the notion of applied linguistics, my main purpose in learning applied linguistics is so that I can identify, investigate, and offer solutions to language-related real-life problems. The real-life problem that I mean here is the translation field. Many of the translation books that I read are difficult to understand and sometimes I understand the original language better. This problem is what I really want to explore and find a solution. In my opinion, applied linguistics is a basic lesson that must be mastered before actually plunging into language problems. Therefore, I strongly want to learn applied linguistics.
2) What is the central issue of Applied Linguistics? Has it changed in the same way as its scope?
Central Issue of Applied Linguistics is Language Itself. What I mean here is the application of our linguistics into the real world that is the issue in applied linguistics. For example, an advertising copy writer search for what would be the most effective use of language to target a particular social group in order to sell a product (McCarthy, 2011). This problem continues to grow and even gets bigger, because the world is getting complex. This is proven by the fact that people used to not pay attention to the words used to promote products. But now people are competing to use the best possible words to promote their products because the fact is that product sales competition is getting stronger nowadays and maybe it will get stronger in the future.
