12 ways to improve English listening Skills and Understand Native Speakers


There are so many ways to improve our listening skills and understand native speakers.
1.      Use wide range of resources and listen to a wide range of accents as well. Because we’re going to
2.      Think about the different sounds that each accent makes. We need to recognize more or less everything and diversify our English.
3.      Ask ourselves, how much time do we actually dedicate to practicing and improving wer listening skills? If it’s not much, So start to lisening right now.
4.      Watch tv programs or movies in English twice. First, don’t try to use subtitle. Second, use subtitle to see what we did pick up what we didn’t pick up and then note it for the next time.
5.      Practice listening blindly, it means, try to listen without seeing the speaker’s lips.
6.      Listen to audiobooks that is interesting and relevant to us. Listen first and then read after.
7.      Listen to youtubers. it’s recommended because we can get free videos and listening tools from it.
8.      Multi task. Try to listen something in English whilst we do something else.
9.      Do not translate. We don’t need to understand every single word, but just context and general meaning. Just remember, fluency over accuracy.
10.  Learn speech patterns. Do research like looking at homophones, it can help us to know the exact same pronunciation but different spellings and different meanings.
11.  Learn about reductions like “wanna” and “gonna”.
12.  Learn about contractions like “I’m” “she’s”.
Comment:
The speaker uses simple language in explaining her material. So, it makes a non-native speaker easier to understand. We, as the listener, do not need to make extra effort to catch the words she said because the speaker explains the material with clear pronunciation and accent. From that video, we gonna understand enough about the material because the speaker gives the explanation and also the examples at once. Overall, I think it’s a good video to help us in improving our listening skill especially for  English.
